Chicago Park District Holds Three Town Halls on 2027 State Micromobility Law Affecting E-Bikes and E-Scooters on Park Paths

The Chicago Park District will hold three public town halls to gather feedback on a new state micromobility law that takes effect January 1, 2027, and will shape how e-bikes, e-scooters and other small electric vehicles are used on park paths and trails.
Park District representatives plan to review the law, explain the categories of micromobility vehicles it identifies and ask attendees about current use of those devices in parks. The district said the feedback will inform additional rules governing the vehicles before the law goes into effect.
The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Clarendon Park, 4501 N. Clarendon Ave. The second is Wednesday, September 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ellis Park, 3520 S. Cottage Grove Ave. A virtual session will follow on Tuesday, October 6, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The state law establishes regulations for electric bicycles, electric motor bikes, electric scooters, electric skateboards, electric unicycles and higher-powered electric devices. It covers where the devices can be ridden, who can ride them and requirements for devices capable of traveling at higher speeds.
The law defines micromobility as small vehicles intended for personal use that allow people to travel short distances. The Park District said the town halls will focus on how those definitions and requirements apply to public park spaces.
