The Chicago Park District said maintenance work on the city’s 18-mile Lakefront Trail begins this fall and will continue for several months. Crews will repair pavement, replace damaged concrete and refresh painted trail markings.

The Park District said the work follows a full inspection of the trail and the hardscape along its edge. The assessment identified repairs needed to restore the pedestrian and bike route, and the Park District scheduled the work to begin within the next few weeks if weather allows.

Repairs will start at 6300 South, east of DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and proceed north one section at a time until they reach Foster Avenue Beach, also east of DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The Park District said crews will complete the southern sections first and move up the lakefront as the project continues.

The Park District will patch and seal-coat asphalt where needed. Workers will remove and replace deteriorated concrete edges, then apply new graphics and lines along the full length of the trail.

Construction signs will be posted ahead of each work zone, the Park District said. It asked trail users to pay attention to the signage and stay out of active construction areas.

For updates on affected sections, the Park District said trail users can check its Lakefront Trail Maintenance page.
