Chicago Opera Theater sells stage-worn costumes Oct. 9 at Fine Arts Building pop-up

Chicago Opera Theater will open its costume vault to the public on Friday, October 9, selling stage-worn pieces from past productions during a pop-up event at the Fine Arts Building.

The sale, titled Take Home the Drama: COT Costume Sale, runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Fine Arts Building at 410 South Michigan Avenue. Chicago Opera Theater said the event is scheduled during the building's Second Fridays programming.

Shoppers will find costumes and accessories pulled directly from past opera productions. The inventory includes cloaks, headpieces, skirts and other garments originally made for the stage. The company described the event as a warehouse-style pop-up.

The timing places the sale less than a month before Halloween, and the theater suggested that buyers could use the costumes for holiday wear as well as everyday fashion.

Every dollar raised will go to Opera for All, Chicago Opera Theater's education program. According to the company, Opera for All brings music, creativity and opera education to 30 classrooms across the greater Chicago area.

The event is free to attend, though purchases support the education fund. Attendees can pay for the items they select during the pop-up.

The Fine Arts Building sits along Michigan Avenue in the Loop, near the Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park. Visitors should plan to take elevators or stairs to the fourth floor.
