Chicago recorded 321 homicides through September, a 3% drop from the same period last year, according to Chicago Police Department data. September had 31 killings, the fewest for that month since 2010, police said.

Chicago recorded 321 homicides through the end of September, a 3% decline from the same point in 2025 and a 29% drop from the first three quarters of 2024, according to Chicago Police Department data released Friday.

September had 31 homicides, 14 fewer than in September 2025. The department said that was the lowest September total dating back to 2010.

The department also reported declines in shootings. In September, the city recorded 136 shootings and 165 shooting victims, both lower than the same month last year, police said. Through the end of September, total shootings were down 4% and shooting victims were down 2% compared with 2025.

The department reported declines in other categories of crime. Carjackings are down 26% this year, according to the department. Robberies have fallen 21%, and burglaries are down 10%.

The department reported decreases on the CTA. Violent crime on the transit system's train and bus lines is down 32% this year, while property crime has dropped 26%, according to police.

Chicago ended 2025 with its fewest recorded killings in six decades.

Police did not release a month-by-month breakdown beyond September or identify which districts drove the largest declines. The department said the September figures reflect crime data compiled through the end of the month.

The police department is expected to release full-year crime statistics after December 31.
