I-94 recorded 113 fatal crashes in Chicagoland from 2020 through 2024, the highest total on a new list of 15 roads in the region. The data comes from the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which tracks fatal crashes only. The 2024 figures are preliminary, while earlier years are final.
I-55 ranked second with 73 fatal crashes, and I-90 ranked third with 61. The full list identifies roads in 7 counties where at least 5 fatal crashes occurred over 5 years. Together, these roads had 719 fatal crashes that killed 802 people. Across all roads in Chicagoland, the system counted 2854 fatal crashes that killed 3103 people during the same period.
