Woman Killed, Four Seriously Injured After Two Boats Collide Near Monroe Harbor on Lake Michigan

A late-night crash between two recreational boats on Lake Michigan turned deadly Thursday, killing a 26-year-old woman and sending four others to Chicago hospitals with serious injuries in a collision that drew a massive multi-agency emergency response near Monroe Harbor.

What Happened

The collision occurred just before midnight near 500 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and 400 East Monroe, close to Monroe Harbor on the city's lakefront. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the crash at approximately 11:45 p.m. and confirmed that 14 people were involved across both vessels, both of which are classified as recreational boats.

Five people were transported to area hospitals in serious to grave condition. Three, including a woman in grave condition, were taken to Northwestern Hospital, while two others were taken to Stroger Hospital. Nine other individuals declined medical treatment at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner later confirmed that one of the hospitalized patients — identified as 26-year-old Johanna H. Gregory — was pronounced dead.

Major Damage, Large Emergency Response

The scene prompted a significant response from multiple agencies, including the Chicago Fire Department, the CFD Scuba Team, Chicago Police Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Video and photos from the scene showed a badly damaged boat roped to a Chicago police vessel on the water, with first responders in life vests carrying injured individuals to shore and loading them into waiting ambulances. Multiple police cars and ambulances blocked nearby roads along the lakefront.

One boat, which sustained the most significant damage, was towed by Chicago police to CPD Marine Unit headquarters. The Coast Guard towed the second boat to Queens Landing, across from Buckingham Fountain.
