Suspected Propane Leak Prompts Hazmat Alert at UIC, Campus Briefly Disrupted
A Saturday evening scare at the University of Illinois Chicago sent firefighters rushing to a campus building after a propane tank was suspected to be leaking, triggering a hazardous material alert that temporarily kept students and faculty away from part of campus.
What Happened
The incident was reported in the 800 block of West Taylor Street, where a campuswide alert was issued urging the university community to stay clear of the area. Chicago firefighters responded to the scene after reports that a propane tank inside the building was believed to be leaking.
Upon arrival, firefighters removed the tank from the building and conducted an inspection — determining that there was in fact no active leak. The situation was declared under control by approximately 7:38 p.m., and normal campus operations resumed shortly after.
The Building and Its Occupants
The affected building houses several important academic and research units, including the Sustainable Energy Research Laboratory and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. While the presence of laboratory facilities made the initial hazmat concern particularly serious, the swift response prevented any disruption beyond a temporary precautionary evacuation of the area.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
A Quick Resolution
The rapid response by Chicago firefighters and university officials helped keep the situation from escalating. With the all-clear issued in a matter of hours, UIC was able to return to normal operations the same evening. Still, the incident serves as a reminder of the unique safety considerations that come with operating active research laboratories on a densely populated urban campus — and the importance of having swift emergency protocols in place when hazardous material concerns arise.
