Missing Elgin Teen Destiny Neal, 16, Identified as Body Found in Fox River
A 16-year-old Elgin girl reported missing just two days earlier has been identified as the body pulled from the Fox River in the northwest Chicago suburb, authorities confirmed Monday — a heartbreaking end to a brief but urgent search.
Destiny Neal, of Elgin, was found dead in the Fox River north of the Kimball Street Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Elgin police responded to the scene at approximately 3:51 p.m., alongside the Elgin Fire Department and the Kane County Coroner's Office.
Neal had been reported missing on June 19, when she was last seen around 7 p.m. walking near the 1200 block of Abbot Drive. She had been missing for only two days before her body was discovered.
An autopsy was performed Monday, but her official cause of death remains pending the results of toxicology samples sent to a national forensic laboratory for extensive analysis. Her manner of death is still under active investigation by both the Kane County Coroner's Office and the Elgin Police Department.
"The Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, and her staff extend their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of young Destiny Neal," officials said in a statement.
Neal's death adds to a troubling pattern of water-related fatalities reported across the greater Chicago area in 2026. Investigators have examined at least 11 such death investigations this year alone, spanning communities from Elk Grove Village to Aurora, Schaumburg, and downtown Chicago.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding Neal's death as the investigation continues. Families and community members in Elgin are left mourning the loss of a teenager whose life was cut tragically short.
