7-Year-Old Boy Dies After Drowning in Lake in the Hills Retention Pond

A 7-year-old boy is dead after he was found unresponsive in a retention pond in the northwest Chicago suburb of Lake in the Hills Wednesday evening, authorities confirmed — a tragic incident that sent officers, paramedics, and family members scrambling in a desperate race against time.

What Happened

Police responded to the 300 block of Steeplechase Way shortly before 6 p.m. after receiving a report of a missing child. Family members told officers they had seen the boy just a short time before he disappeared.

During the search, an officer located the child unresponsive in a nearby retention pond. The officer pulled the boy from the water and immediately began life-saving efforts. Paramedics arrived within minutes and continued emergency treatment before transporting the child to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the boy's name.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department and the McHenry County Coroner's Office are jointly investigating the death. The coroner's office confirmed the cause of death as drowning. Police stated that foul play is not suspected.
