One Man Dead, Another Injured in Early-Morning River North Shooting at State and Grand

A pre-dawn shooting at one of downtown Chicago's busiest intersections turned deadly Wednesday morning, leaving a 30-year-old man dead and a 65-year-old man wounded — and prompting a heavy police response that shut down streets in the heart of River North.

What Happened

The shooting unfolded around 3:20 a.m. in the 500 block of North State Street, near the intersection of Grand Avenue. According to Chicago police, both men were outside when they heard gunshots and felt pain. The 30-year-old was struck multiple times and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. The 65-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported in fair condition.

An employee at the Royal Sonesta Chicago River North, located near the scene, told authorities he heard multiple shots fired, though no hotel guests or staff were reported to be involved.

Scale of the Scene

The scope of the police response underscored the intensity of the incident. Officers and detectives canvassed the area as yellow and red police tape blocked off portions of both State Street and Grand Avenue — a corridor lined with hotels and office buildings. As many as 68 yellow evidence markers, typically placed near shell casings, were visible on the ground. Several windows of a nearby office building were riddled with bullet holes.

Investigation Ongoing

As of early Wednesday morning, no one was in custody and an investigation remained active. Chicago police did not immediately release information about a motive or a possible shooter.
