Man, 30, Shot and Killed in Fight Near Lincoln Park Bars

A 30-year-old man was shot and killed late Sunday night during a fight near a cluster of bars in Lincoln Park, Chicago police said, the second shooting in the same stretch of North Lincoln Avenue in about a month.

Police said the shooting happened around 11:43 p.m. in the 2200 block of North Lincoln Avenue, near the intersection of Lincoln and Webster avenues. Officers said a physical fight broke out near a bar, and at some point during the altercation, someone pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the man. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead there.

One person was taken into custody at the scene, and a gun was recovered, police said. Charges against the suspect were pending as of early Monday.

Photos and video from the scene showed streets near Lincoln and Webster cordoned off with police tape well into the overnight hours, with officers working to clear bars and restaurants in the area. More than 20 evidence markers, the kind typically used to flag shell casings, were visible on the pavement.

The shooting is the second in the immediate area in recent weeks. In June, a shooting tied to a fight outside a different bar at Lincoln and Belden avenues, just blocks away, left one person in critical condition. That earlier shooting happened as a group was leaving the bar.

43rd Ward Ald. Timmy Knudsen wrote to neighbors after the June shooting outlining years of friction between his office and the businesses along that corridor. In the letter, Knudsen said his office had been working with the city's Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Department and the Chicago Police Department to push for tighter rules on nightlife in the area, citing recurring complaints from neighbors and other businesses about noise, cleanliness and safety tied to a handful of establishments. Knudsen wrote that he was seeking authority from the city to set new rules specifically for the stretch of businesses near Lincoln and Belden.

Knudsen's office did not respond to a request for comment following Sunday night's shooting.

Lincoln and Webster is a few blocks from Lincoln and Belden, where the June shooting took place. Both intersections draw large weekend crowds to their bars and restaurants, and residents near each have raised concerns for years about fights spilling into the street after closing time.

Police have not released the identity of the man killed Sunday, and have not said what sparked the fight that preceded the shooting. Detectives were still gathering evidence at the scene early Monday, and no further details on the suspect's background or the specific charges being sought were immediately available.

Knudsen has not said when the city might act on the rule changes he requested from BACP and police after the June shooting. Chicago police said the investigation into Sunday's shooting is ongoing.
